From Bare Patches to Bee Paradise: Clover Saved the Day

Posted 1.17.2026

There’s something deeply satisfying about doing something good for yourself and the environment. In the summer of 2025, I had the joy of experiencing that firsthand thanks to my husband’s latest project!

We’d started noticing more bare patches popping up across our lawn, along with erosion that had us a little concerned. My husband had tried planting grass in the past with very little luck. He’d dig, plant, water, and even build barriers to keep the dogs from trampling it—yet crabgrass always took over. So frustrating.

But not this year!

This time, my husband planted clover—and it has completely transformed our lawn. According to him, the process was super simple: rake the soil, scatter the clover seeds, and keep them moist for a few weeks. That’s it. And now, our lawn is thriving.

Although clover has a slightly different green than traditional grass, our lawn looks far lusher than it did just a few months ago. Even better, the clover is helping to hold the soil in place, making erosion a thing of the past.

Bonus #1: Bees love clover, and we love bees! We’ve planted tons of pollinator-friendly flowers so the whole garden is buzzing—in the best way.

Bonus #2: With fewer bare patches, we haven’t seen a single ground wasp nest this season. That alone is worth celebrating!

Final Thoughts:

Swapping grass for clover might not be traditional, but sometimes the greener choice is the one that works with nature instead of against it. Our lawn may look a little different than our neighbors’, but it’s resilient, low-maintenance, and full of life—and to us, that’s pretty perfect.

We love our little patch of clover-covered paradise—but I’d love to hear what’s working in your yard. For example:

  • Do you have a favorite low maintenance or eco-friendly landscaping trick?
  • Do you have any ideas for keeping lawns beautiful and dog-friendly?
