Lavender is one of those plants that gives more than it takes. It perfumes the garden, keeps certain pests away, and rewards you with blooms that beg to be gathered. And when pruning season arrives, those fragrant buds can become beautiful, useful gifts instead of garden waste. Here are a few simple ways to put them to work:
- Scent bundles
- Face/body spray
- Skin Oil
- Sugar scrub
- Bath salts
- Soap
Scent Bundles – The easiest gift of all. Tie dried lavender into small bundles with twine, ribbon, or whatever you have on hand. Hang them in the shower for aromatherapy or place them on a nightstand for a calming bedtime scent. Last year I put some on my nightstand and could smell the scent months after harvesting when I went to bed each night!
Spray – Steep lavender buds in water for a few days, strain, and pour into a spray bottle. Use it on pillows, or as a light, natural body mist for anyone who prefers gentle fragrance over heavy perfumes.
Skin Oil – Combine buds with jojoba oil for a few weeks, then strain. The result is a lightly scented moisturizer perfect for elbows, knees, heels — or anywhere that needs a little hydration.
Sugar Scrub or Bath Salts – These take a few extra ingredients and a jar, but they come together in minutes. Just be mindful of nut oils if gifting to someone with allergies. If you plan to sell scrubs or salts, remember they’re considered cosmetics in the U.S. and must comply with the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act, the Fair Packaging and Labeling Act, and 21 CFR Parts 700–740.
Soap – Handmade soap takes the most effort but makes a lovely gift — and possibly a new hobby. Before selling, check whether your recipe qualifies as “soap” or a “cosmetic,” as cosmetics must meet federal labeling and safety requirements mentioned above.
The more I experiment with lavender, the more I appreciate how generous this plant truly is. One pruning can become a handful of gifts, a moment of self‑care, or the start of a new hobby.
